REM sleep occurs about 90 minutes after sleep onset. The muscles become completely relaxed, and heart rate and breathing reach their lowest levels. During this phase, the brain produces slow delta waves. Body temperature drops, and the eyes stop moving. During this stage, heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing decrease. Stage 2 begins about 25 minutes after sleep onset. It occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep. The brain cycles through non-REM and REM sleep around four to six times per night.
